About

Katankin is the new solo project by Melbourne-based independent singer/songwriter/instrumentalist Helen Catanchin. Formally trained as a jazz singer, with Katankin Helen makes a departure from her previous contemporary jazz releases, to explore electronic and indie pop production techniques and arrangements, whilst maintaining the same emphasis on poetic, heartfelt lyrics and her unique and powerfully expressive vocals.

Katankin’s debut single Hey Little Spider was released on June 30th, and is a moving and vulnerable exploration of existential angst, that uses moody and evocative symbolism to delve into some very human and relatable states of being. The track’s lush electronic production by veteran producer Philip Rex (of Tonelab and Decoy fame) creates an affecting accompaniment to Helen’s unique vocals, comprising rich orchestral string lines, synth pad swells, and a deep bass drum pattern as the steady heartbeat of the song.

The recently released music video produced and directed by Elizabeth Fermanis is a strikingly lush, dreamy and intense visual narrative that complements the song’s themes in a perfect pairing of sound and imagery.

A follow-up single is currently in production, and a debut EP recording slated for release in the next 12 months. Follow Katankin to discover an inner world of musings and murmurs, laid bare through song, in all its darkness and light.
